Gingivitis
Gingivitis is caused by a buildup of dental plaque along the gumline and in-between the teeth. Plaque is a sticky creamy yellow substance made up of bacteria, bacterial toxins and food debris. When plaque is left to sit on the gums it causes irritation and inflammation resulting in red swollen and bleeding gums. If left undisturbed for an extended period of time the plaque will harden and form calculus or tartar. The bacteria and toxins in the plaque can also cause tooth decay. The good news about gingivitis is that it is reversible. By having your teeth cleaned by a dentist or hygienist to remove the plaque buildup and maintaining good oral hygiene habits at home the bleeding and swelling of the gums will cease and the gums will return to a healthy state. It is important to note that if you do not maintain effective brushing and flossing habits at home the gingivitis will return.
